Let’s talk turkey about the Food Drive

“I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!”

“What’s for dinner? I’m starving!”

These common expressions are, of course, said tongue-in-cheek. Few of us know what it’s like to go hungry for a sustained period, let alone to starve. And most of us rarely miss a meal, unless we’re trying to lose a few pounds due to all the good food we’ve already enjoyed.

But what if you had no food in your fridge or cupboards and no money to buy any? In the greater Oceanside community, over 1000 people find themselves in this situation at times and are asking the Salvation Army for help to get through the fall and winter. This represents an increase of 20% more per month over last year, due to rising housing costs, low wages and unemployment.

Families with young children send them off to school literally hungry enough to “eat a horse.” Low income seniors sometimes choose between buying food or spending their severely limited budget on life saving medications. For these people, there is no answer to the question, “what’s for dinner?”

So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, let’s talk turkey! Here in Craig Bay, it’s easy to get immersed in our own micro-community and not think about what life must be like for people who struggle just to feed themselves. But to quote John Bradford, a historical figure from the 16th century, “There but for the grace of God go I”. Those words still resonate today, whatever your religious persuasion, or lack thereof.

This weekend, we traditionally give thanks for the abundance in our own lives. It’s the perfect time to remember others in the community whose circumstances are less fortunate. Here’s a quick, easy way to make a meaningful gesture that won’t cost you much. When you go shopping for your Thanksgiving celebration, please pick up some extra non-perishable food items. Then drop them off in the designated box in the Craig Bay office.

Not going shopping this weekend?
Donations of food, cash, or cheques can be left at the Beach Club until
November 16th.

Cash or cheques over $10 will receive a tax receipt and may be given to Allison Siemens. Please make cheques payable to The Salvation Army.

Help fill the shelves at our local Salvation Army Food Bank as we head into the holiday season – so that no one in our community is literally hungry enough to eat a horse.
