Artists’ Corner:
MEET THE ARTISTS AND LEARN ABOUT THEIR ART
April 2026

DEBORAH PHILIPP
Painter, Abstract
BRIAN STONE
“RUSSEL PIER 1.2”
From the boardwalk in the town of Russel on the North Island of New Zealand, a series of night photos of the local pier led to this image being applied to aluminum, then over-painted with oil and finished with varnish.
“ATLANTIS 2.1”
Stemming from a vacation in the Bahamas, I was intrigued by a dual-aspect view of Atlantis through an outdoor aquarium. I explored this further by printing my photo on aluminum, then applying oil paint to create additional visual layers.

MERRILYN LAURSEN
“MY TREE at CRAIG BAY APPEARS AGAIN”
Layered paper, image and cutouts
Continuing on my art journey means I’m always open to exploring new methods and learning through other artists.
This circular collage is a result of learning from Cordula Kagemann, a German artist who offers an online course called “Process and Possibilities “
The process included incorporating many layers of transparent paper as well as an image transfer, and two paper cutouts.
It’s interesting that my favourite fir tree down by the water at Craig Bay once again inspired me as it has been in several of my past paintings. It was quite the challenge to make a cutout of it for this collage.
CAROL ANN OWERS
“HERMOSAS PUERTAS MEXICANA”
Painter, Medium Acrylic
Colourful Mexican doors are a blend of colours,
intricate designs, and rich culture of their heritage, a welcoming piece of art.
While residing for several years in the town of Ajijic in the state of Jalisco I had the opportunity to
capture on canvas these incredible beautiful doors.

SUSAN MILLER
“THROW OFF the BOWLINES”
Photographer
I “hang out” most days in one of two places- French Creek Marina or Rathtrevor Beach.
Last month I was walking the marina at French Creek early morning and thought the boat masts were awesome silhouettes.
Sarah Brown’s quote seemed so fitting for the scene.
“Throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
NANCY KLINGER
“NESTLED”
While walking the Lake District, England, through the fields and hills, we came upon this serene little house. It was such a surprise, out in the middle of nowhere. I can still smell the smoke coming out of the chimney. It really caught my attention. So peaceful looking!
The hard part of painting this canvas was getting all the greens to show up against each other, showing foreground and background.

JOHN VINCENT
“FERRY LANDING, CROFTON, BC 2025”
Painter, Watercolour
This painting depicts the view from the beach at the Crofton landing site, where the ferry travels to and from Saltspring Island. I painted this
watercolour from a photograph I took on one of our many trips to Saltspring.
KELLY HOBBIS
“ORCA”
Fibre Artist, Quilt
Sewing Machine pieced to create the orca. The quilting is done mechanically (not computerized) on a long-armed sewing machine. The quilting pattern followed a pantograph to create the wave like quilting.

HELEN GOLDRING
“ELEGANCE IN BLOOM”
Painter
Calla Lillies are prized for their beauty and elegance. The interplay of highlights and shadow helps define the flower’s movement and creates a sense of depth, emphasizing both delicacy and strength.
