Painting the Front Door

In April 2025, the CLC approved the implementation of the process for painting Front Doors in Arbutus Grove, Meadow Beach and Seaside Village. The Onyx opted out of this plan and Shorehaven already has the option to paint their doors.

Choosing Your Colour

Owners from Arbutus Grove, Meadow Beach and Seaside Village who wish to paint their front doors can choose from a palette of 12 colours (see image on this page – please note that actual colours may vary from the screen image). To help owners make their final decisions, large (10”x30”) paint chips are available to be borrowed from members of the Door Colour Sub-Committee.

  • Please contact a sub-committee member listed below to arrange a time to pick up the sample.
  • Because of the expected interest, anyone borrowing these colour samples is asked to return them within 24 hours.

For Seaside Village, two sets of colour samples are available so owners can contact:

There is one set of colour samples available to borrow in each of Arbutus Grove and Meadow Beach.

In Arbutus Grove, the primary location of the samples will be with:

  • Lynda Kemp – 250-228-3372; or,
  • Owners can also contact Kim McCabe – 226-668-6448

In Meadow Beach, the primary location of the samples will be with:

  • Nancy Young – 250-586-6562; or,
  • Owners can also contact Merrilyn Laursen – 250-951-2168

Remember

  • An approved CPMR or Permission Request (Arbutus Grove) is necessary before painting can start.
  • The only door to be painted is the front door.
  • Only one colour per door.
  • The current white colour always remains an option.
  • If there is a sidelight, painting it is optional.
  • If it is a double front door, both the door and matching panel must be painted.
  • The wood components including the jamb, mull posts, and trim must remain white.

The Costs

  • Owners are responsible for the cost of painting.
  • Owners may paint their own doors if they prefer.
  • If owners would rather hire a professional painter, Home Pro Painters has said they will charge $220 for a single door, $300 for a door with a sidelight and $320 for double doors. This price includes the paint. These costs are subject to change.

The Paint

  • The paint must be purchased from Cloverdale Paints.
  • The paint must be Cloverdale Multi Master Exterior Paint.
  • Cloverdale Paints in Parksville is aware of our painting program and has a list of the chosen colours.

How to Paint

Advice from Home Pro Painting who have been painting Craig Bay homes for many years (info@homepropainting.ca):

  • Cleaning – Washing is not usually necessary unless the door is very dirty. If there is visible dirt or grease, a quick wipe with soap and water can help, but in most cases, sanding is enough to prep the surface.
  • Sanding – Lightly scuff the entire door using a sanding sponge or fine-grit sandpaper to help the paint adhere better and then wipe off the dust.
  • Hardware – Removing the hardware is not recommended, especially locks, since older ones can be tricky to reinstall properly. Instead, it is best to use painter’s tape to cover handles, locks, and hinges for a clean finish.
  • Edges – If the door has indentations on either side of the deadbolt, it is recommended to stop the exterior color at the indentation on the outdoor side of the deadbolt for cleanest look from the outside when the door is closed. If there are no indentations, it is recommended to use painter’s tape a similar distance from the edge to make a straight line and paint to it.
